A Grand Day Out

On Valentine’s Day, Michael our Dereham shop manager, visited the Cheapside Hoard – a unique collection of 16th and 17th Century jewellery currently on display in the Museum of London.

Michael saw the exhibition as part of a visit organised by the Registered Valuers Society – of which he’s a member. As many of you will know, Michael has a real passion for jewellery and an interest that goes beyond his working day – so previously he’s viewed exhibitions from the Victorian and Georgian era – but this collection goes even further back! ‘The highlights for me were a stunning brooch of a salamander, set with Columbian emeralds and also Elizabethan and Jacobean portrait jewellery’, commented Michael. He was also surprised at how international the jewellery trade was in London at this time, with the trade in precious gems and continental craftsmen who worked in the city. The Hoard, which was found buried in a cellar in Cheapside in 1912, is on display in its entirety, for the first time in over a century.

A brooch of a salamander set with Columbian emeralds– just one of the ‘stunning’ pieces from the Cheapside Hoard, which caught Michael’s eye.
